T12 Bird Mammal Extinctions

Figure 1. Modelled trend in Mammal and bird extinctions 1800-2000 and statistical extrapolation from 2001- 2020. The solid black line represents the model fit for the period with data. Long dashes represent the model projection for the extrapolation period. Short dashes represent 95% statistical confidence bounds for the modelled trend and extrapolations. Black dots represent data points. The horizontal dashed grey line is the model-estimated 2010 value for the indicator. Extrapolation assumes underlying processes remain constant. Current storyline

The rate of extinctions accelerated to a peak in the late 1800s. A more recent decline in the last decades of the 20th century at least in part likely reflects time lags in detection of extinctions.

Data and methodology

Coverage: Global/Regional

Scale: Global data

Time series available: 1500-2010

Next planned update: 2020

Possible disaggregations: Birds, mammals

Methodolgy: Data are extracted from the IUCN Red List on estimated dates of extinction. Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) and Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) species are included.

National use of indicator

The approach could be applied nationally, but may be complicated by the potential for rescue of populations through dispersal from populations in other countries.
