The 2010 BIP has contributed to the new 2010 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Report, to assess international efforts in reducing extreme poverty. The report released on the 23rd June, highlights results from 60 indicators selected to measure progress towards the eight MDGs. The 2010 BIP has developed and contributed information for two of the indicators under MDG 7b; ‘to reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss’.
The report features the BIP’s ‘proportion of terrestrial and marine areas protected’ (Coverage of Protected Areas and overlays with biodiversity) indicator, created in partnership with UNEP-WCMC. It shows that while the proportion of protected areas has increased to 12% of the Earth’s land area and almost 1% of its sea area, more than two thirds of areas designated as critical for conservation remain unprotected or only partially protected.
Also included are the findings of the BIP’s ‘proportion of species threatened with extinction’ (Red List Index) indicator, developed in partnership with Birdlife International, IUCN and ZSL. These findings are equally alarming and show that the number of species facing extinction is increasing, with mammals in developing countries particularly at risk.
Both BIP indicators presented in the report show that the world has failed to meet the 2010 biodiversity target.
