An International Expert Workshop is being organised to support the upcoming Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on indicators for the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, which was established by Tenth Conference of the Parties (COP10) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (see CBD notification 2011-068).  The workshop is being hosted by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) from 20 to 22 June 2011 in High Wycombe, UK, and is convened by UNEP-WCMC and the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Funding for the workshop and support for participants is being provided by the UK, Canada, Norway, Switzerland and the European Environment Agency.

Following the adoption of the 20 Aichi Targets at COP10 in Nagoya, the workshop will contribute to the process to identify appropriate indicators to track the Aichi targets at global, regional and national scales, to provide guidance for implementation of indicators, and to strengthen linkage between indicator assessments and reporting at these scales.  

The workshop will draw upon the wide variety of studies that have been prepared for the AHTEG, and in addition will review lessons learnt from the indicator suite used to track the 2010 Biodiversity Target.   The main body of the workshop will comprise a series of breakout group sessions to consider the selection and development of indicators to track the Aichi Targets at both local/national and regional/global scales, develop guidance for national implementation and strengthen linkages. Feedback and plenary sessions will then consider the outputs of the breakout groups in order to distil options for the AHTEG to consider.
