NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY INDICATORS - AFRICAN EXPERIENCES AND NEEDS
Representatives of several eastern and southern African countries will report on their successes and needs in developing national biodiversity indicators. They will present some indicators developed during 2009 and 2010, their impact so far, and the lessons learnt about the capacity required to produce successful indicators. The event is designed to support the discussions at SBSTTA and WGRI regarding post-2010 CBD targets and indicators, emphasizing the need to support national-level implementation. The event is jointly organised by UNEP-WCMC, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), who are partners in the UNEP project ‘Biodiversity Indicators Capacity Strengthening in Africa’, with funding from the UN Development Account.

The 2010 Biodiversity Indicators Partnership draws on the outputs and experiences of over 40 partner organizations, as well as a range of Parties, MEA bodies and the private sector in understanding the challenges faced in monitoring progress towards a global biodiversity target. Highlighting the lessons learnt, and in support of the discussions under Agenda Items 3.2 and 3.4 of SBSTTA, this side event will put forward a series of recommendations to support the CBD, its Parties and the wider biodiversity community in the development of appropriate indicators, and what the resulting messages are telling us. This side event will be co-convened by the CBD Secretariat, and will include presentations from the indicator developers and users involved in the Partnership.
